I freely and voluntarily consent to be a participant in a research project entitled: “Interactivity’s Affect on Involvement and Aggression” to be conducted at Muskingum University in the spring semester of 2010 with Kristin Brumley as the principle investigator. I have been told that my part will require about 30 minutes.

The purpose of this study is to explore interactivity and its effects on a user’s emotional and cognitive involvement and aggression. Participants will answer a pre-survey about their demographics, and their potential for involvement and aggression. After this survey, participants will be placed randomly into groups and asked to watch, from start to finish, a 20 minute movie.

Participants should be advised that they may experience mild language and/or violence during this movie, compared to a TV-PG rating.   

During the movie, participants may be asked additional questions. Participants will also be monitored for completion of viewing the movie, and are asked to watch the movie in its complete length.

After viewing the movie, participants will be asked to complete a post-survey measuring involvement developed during the movie, as well as the participant’s opinion on the movie’s interactivity. Participants are asked not to repeat the movie.

I understand that any risk involved in my participation in this research will be minimal. I have been told that my responses will be kept strictly confidential. All responses will be identified only by a code number, and my individual responses will not be revealed to anyone without my permission.

Participation in the project is strictly voluntary and refusal to participate will involve no penalty. This is a confidential survey in which the results will not be used to identify individual children or adults.

I certify that I am 18 years of age or older.

I understand that I may withdraw my consent and discontinue participation in this research at any time without prejudice. I have been given the right to ask questions concerning the procedure, and any questions I have about the procedure have now been satisfactorily answered.

I understand that if I experience any emotional distress as a result of participating in this research, I may contact the Muskingum University Counseling Services at 740-826-8142.
